TestDaF-Institut and gast logos

The TestDaF Institute belongs to the Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung e.V., named g.a.s.t (Society of Academic Study Preparation and Test Development, a registered association). The tasks of this nonprofit association consist of development and administration of proficiency and aptitude tests in the domain of higher education: TestDaF (Test of German as a Foreign Language), TestAS (Test for Academic Studies), and onDaF (Online Placement Test of German as a Foreign Language).

Together with the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich the TestDaF Institute offers the innovative webportal Deutsch-Uni Online (DUO) for learning languages and for linguistic and subject-related preparation for studies of higher education in Germany. A special preparatory tool provides guidance for the TestDaF.

Members of g.a.s.t are the Rectors’ Conference of German Institutions of Higher Education (HRK), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Goethe Institute, the Universities of Bochum, Hagen and Leipzig and the Association for German as a Foreign Language (Fadaf).

Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache (TestDaF)

The TestDaF is a standardised proficiency test for students from abroad who apply for admission at studies of higher education or for researchers who are interested in a sabbatical year in Germany. The test is approved by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs as well as by the HRK and allows for linguistic admission at all institutions of higher education in Germany. Most of these institutions require the TestDaF proficiency level TDN 4 in all four test components for admission. TestDaF level TDN 4 corresponds to B2+/C1.1 in the Common European Framework of Reference.

The examination is currently offered by 419 licensed test centres in 91 countries including Germany. In 2010, six test administrations took place worldwide and three exclusively at test centres in the People’s Republic of China. About 18.528 participants took the test in 2010.

Candidates have to register online at our website www.testdaf.de for the worldwide test, and at www.etest.net.cn for the TestDaF in China. For more detail including a list of test centres and sample material see our website.

Results are issued generally six weeks after test administration.
