The TestDaF-Institut was founded in Spring 2001 in order to develop and administer the TestDaF (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache - Test of German as a foreign language) and to provide adequate quality assurance. It is a non-profit institution affiliated to the University of Hagen and the Ruhr-University Bochum. The main objective is to facilitate foreign students' access to German institutions of higher education by offering a measure of students' proficiency in German already available in the candidate's home country.
The TestDaF-Institut offers at present one examination for German as a foreign language: the TestDaF. It is a proficiency test covering the levels Vantage and Effective Proficiency. The TestDaF certificate is recognized in Germany as evidence of language proficiency for studies at German institutions of higher education.
