Scrúdú Meánleibhéal 2
The examination has four components:
- Speaking
- Listening comprehension
- Reading
- Writing and the use of Irish
The speaking component
Format: Each candidate is tested individually. One examiner and one interlocutor are present during the examination, which is recorded.
There are two sections.
Section one: The candidate answers a number of questions relating to him/herself and his/her everyday life (based on the specifications).
Section two: The candidate describes a picture or a series of pictures.
Duration: Approximately 10 minutes.
Weighting: This component accounts for 25% of the total marks. Both sections are given equal weighting.
The listening component
Format: There are four sections. Candidates will hear news items, messages, radio programme excerpts, conversations, interviews, discussions or presentations. There are usually thirty-six items featuring the following task types: multiple-choice, short answer questions and sentence completion.
Duration: Approximately 35 minutes
Weighting: This component accounts for 25% of the total marks.
The reading component
Format: There are three sections. The candidate is expected to read a variety of texts: articles, descriptions, reviews, formal letters, brochures and extracts from books, web pages, letters, etc. There are approximately twenty items featuring the following task types: multiple-matching, multiple-choice, short answer questions.
Duration: 135 minutes for the Reading and Writing component.
Weighting: This component accounts for 25% of the total marks.
The writing and use-of-Irish component
Format: There are three tasks. In the first task candidates must write a letter and respond to certain points raised in an email/letter/advertisement. In the second task the candidate must write a review, an article or an essay on one of two topics. For the third task, the candidate edits a short text.
Duration: 135 minutes for the Reading and Writing component.
Weighting: This component accounts for 25% of the total marks.
Results
The following grades will be awarded in this examination: Pass, Merit and Distinction. The pass mark is 60% of the total. Certificates are awarded to all successful candidates.
