Language Centre,
National University of Ireland, Maynooth.

The Language Centre at NUI Maynooth was established in 1972. It provides academic support for the University language departments and tuition in ten languages for students, members of staff and the general public. A particular focus of the work of the Centre is Irish-language education, in which it offers a number of programmes leading to National University of Ireland qualifications.

In 2005 the Language Centre introduced Teastas Eorpach na Gaeilge (teg), an examination system specifically for adult learners of Irish. The Centre currently offers tests at five levels:

Bonnleibhéal 1
Bonnleibhéal 2
Meánleibhéal 1
Meánleibhéal 2
Ardleibhéal 1

These levels correspond to levels A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

All five examinations are held once a year at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. Bonnleibhéal 1, Bonnleibhéal 2, Meénleibhéal 1 and Meánleibhéal 2 are offered at three other centres in the main Gaeltacht (Irish–speaking) areas. In addition, Bonnleibhéal 1 examinations are offered in Paris, Prague, New York and Cambridge, and Bonnleibhéal 2 examinations are also held in Paris. All information relating to the Irish examinations (syllabi, sample papers, registration dates and procedures, etc) can be found at www.teg.ie. Candidates are informed of their results six to eight weeks after the examination.
