Department of Lithuanian Studies

The Department of Lithuanian Studies, Vilnius University , opened in 1990, offers a study programme of Lithuanian as a second/foreign language and Lithuanian culture to local and international students of different mother-tongue backgrounds. Among the numerous activities of the department are methodology development, syllabus design and textbook writing.
From 1999 to 2005, the Department of Lithuanian Studies was an associate member of ALTE. In 2005 the department became a full member and has been contributing to language policy, test design and exam administration at the national level.
The Department‘s testing group are involved in:
- designing tests of Lithuanian as a state language,
- designing university entrance examinations for graduates of secondary schools outside Lithuania,
- designing graduation (Matura) examinations of Lithuanian as a state language for non-Lithuanian school graduates,
- teaching and testing Lithuanian as a foreign language within ALTE framework,
- training item writers and test administrators,
- providing in-service teacher training courses etc.
The testing group of the Department of Lithuanian Studies designs the following tests:
- test of Lithuanian as a state language Category I (Level A2)
- test of Lithuanian as a state language Category II (Level B1)
- test of Lithuanian as a state language Category III (Level B2)
- university entrance examination of the Lithuanian language for graduates of secondary schools outside Lithuania
- Level A2
- Level B1
- Level B2
