University of Ljubljana,
Centre for Slovene as a Second/Foreign Language
The Centre for Slovene as a Second/Foreign Language at the Department of Slovene Studies of the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, comprises five programmes which encourage international research and the promotion of Slovene language, literature and culture abroad, and develop the methodology and didactics of teaching Slovene as Second/Foreign language. Since 1994, its Examination Centre has been authorised to administer tests of knowledge of Slovene and to issue official Certificates of Slovene as a Foreign/Second Language, which are required, among other things, for Slovene citizenship, obtaining a work permit, or enrolment in Slovene universities and colleges.
There are three levels of the Slovene Language Exam - Basic, Intermediate and Advanced - in accordance with the standards of linguistic knowledge specified by the educational programme Slovene for Foreign Learners (www.acs.si, Programoteka). All three levels take the speakers and their levels of independence in communicating in Slovene into consideration and are internationally comparable: the Basic Level with the third level (B1), the Intermediate Level with the fourth level (B2) and the Advanced Level with the fifth level (C1) of the Council of Europe scale.
In addition to designing exam materials and organising examinations in Slovene, the activities of the Examination Centre include designing suitable programmes, regulating the standards of knowledge of Slovene and the standards used for testing, as well as the organisation and implementation of suitable examiner and assessor training for examinations of Slovene.
