Stockholm University, founded in 1878, is a body corporate. It is one of the largest Universities in Sweden with 35 000 registered students. Swedish as a Foreign/Second Language has been taught at the university since 1947. These courses are given at the Dpt of Scandinavian Languages.

The Centre for Research on Bilingualism (Centrum för tvåspråkighetsforskning) has produced the National Test of Swedish for Adult Immigrants, Sfi-provet, since 1996 at the request of the National Agency for Education. The test is in the region of CEF level B1 . Two versions of the test are produced annually and offered to schools and institutions where instruction in Swedish for Adult Immigrants is given. The main purpose of the test is - like all national tests produced at the request of the National Agency for Education - 'to support teachers in their grading of students'. Thus the test is not a decisive 'pass or fail examination' - rather it provides teachers with a sample of texts and tasks appropriate for the proficiency level outlined for course D in the new curriculum on the basis of which they are to make their final assessment.

Examples of materials can be found at: www.biling.su.se
Old versions of the test can be downloaded from the National Agency for Education: http://www.skolverket.se/

The Department of Scandinavian Languages (Institutionen för nordiska språk) at Stockholm University in co-operation with the Universities of Gothenburg, Linköping, Lund, Malmö, Umeå and Uppsala is responsible for producing, analysing and developing Tisus (Test in Swedish for university studies). It is in the region of CEF level C1. This level gives eligibility to university studies in Sweden. The examination can be taken twice a year at seven universities/colleges in Sweden. A version of Tisus (Tisus utland) is given abroad twice a year. Examples of materials can be found at: www.nordiska.su.se
