Examination System

DG: Canolradd (Intermediate)

There are 5 components:

Listening

Two compulsory questions:

i. Dialogue - candidates must answer questions based on a pre-recorded dialogue.

ii. News bulletin - candidates must answer questions based on a pre-recorded news bulletin.

Duration: approximately 50 minutes

Speaking

Three compulsory parts:

i. Communicative Task - candidates have 20 minutes to prepare a communicative task to be performed with the interlocutor. The task requires approximately 5 minutes.

ii. Interview - candidates must answer questions and elaborate on their background, interests, work etc. for approximately 15 minutes.

[iii. Pre-recorded oral task - candidates are required to record an oral task with a fluent /first language speaker lasting approximately 5 minutes.]

Duration of speaking test: approximately 20 minutes

Reading

Two compulsory tasks:

i. Article - candidates must answer questions based on an article from a Welsh newspaper or magazine.

ii. Advertisement - candidates must answer questions based on an authentic advertisement.

Structural Competence

One compulsory task:

i. Gap-filling - candidates must fill in the gaps (mainly grammatical) in a text.

The gap-filling question is contained within the Reading test.

Duration: 50 minutes.

Writing

Two compulsory tasks:

i. Form filling - candidates must fill a detailed form or questionnaire requiring approximately 150 words.

ii. Letter writing - candidates must write a letter based on a specific situation or context requiring approximately 100 words.

Duration: 75 minutes

Weighting of components

Listening 10%, Speaking 50%, Pre-recorded Oral Task 10%, Reading 10%, Structural Competence 5%, Writing 15%.

Results

Grades are awarded A-C (Pass) D (near fail) and F (Fail). Candidates are sent individual scores for each test. The pass mark is 50% of the total.
