Examination System

There are 5 components:

Listening

i. Announcements - candidates must fill an information grid based on a pre-recorded list of announcements about familiar
events.


ii. Dialogue - candidates must choose the appropriate symbol based on the information in the dialogue (multiple choice).

Duration: approximately 20 minutes

Speaking

Three compulsory parts:

i. Pronunciation - candidates are given a short paragraph to prepare 10 minutes prior to the interview and must read aloud to the interlocutor.


ii. Asking questions - candidates must ask questions to the oral examiner based on visual cues, i.e. flash-cards.


iii. Responding to questions - candidates must answer questions from a set list which is given in the specification.

Duration: approximately 10 minutes

Reading

Two compulsory tasks:

i. Signs - candidates must choose the appropriate context for a common sign (multiple choice).


ii. Dialogue - candidates must fill an information grid based on a dialogue on a familiar topic.

Structural Competence

One compulsory task:

i. Gap-filling - candidates must fill in the gaps (e.g. lexical or syntactic) in discrete sentences.

The gap-filling question is contained within the Reading test.

Duration: 30 minutes.

Writing

Two compulsory tasks:
i. Post-card - candidates must write a post-card containing specific cues.


ii. Portrait - candidates must write discrete 3rd person sentences based on a diagram with symbols describing another person.


Duration: 30 minutes

Weighting of components

Listening 20%, Speaking 50%, Reading 10%, Structural Competence 5%, Writing 10%.

Results

Grades are not awarded at this level. Candidates are sent individual scores for each test and awarded Pass / Fail. The pass mark is 50% of the total.
