Instituto Cervantes is an institution that was founded by the Spanish government in 1991 to universally promote the Spanish language, its teaching, study and use, as well as develop the quality and visibility of these, and to spread Spanish and Hispanic-American culture. The central head office of the institution is located in Madrid and in Alcalá de Henares (Madrid), birthplace of the writer Miguel de Cervantes.

Instituto Cervantes is present on five continents with more than 86 centers spread out across many different countries and is committed to the improvement of the study, the use and the teaching of the Spanish language. 

The goals of Instituto Cervantes are:

1. To universally promote the Spanish language, its teaching, study and use, as well as develop the quality and visibility of these          activities.

2. To contribute to the dissemination of Spanish culture abroad in line with the corresponding entities of the Public            Administration.

3. Instituto Cervantes will foremost attend to the cultural and linguistic heritage common to the Spanish-speaking countries and communities.

In order to achieve these goals, Instituto Cervantes commits itself to:

  • Organizing and promoting Spanish language courses.
  • Coordinating official Spanish language examinations to obtain the official diplomas issued by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Sciences.
  • Developing pathways for the dissemination of Spanish, particularly through social media, for teacher training and for the publication of materials to support Spanish teaching.
  • Encouraging research on the Spanish language and its teaching, as well as facilitating and assisting Hispanist and other research centers in their investigations.
  • Programming cultural activities that cover all the arts in line with Instituto Cervantes' aims.

The work of Instituto Cervantes is directed by representatives from the academic, cultural and literary world within the field of Spanish and Hispanic-America.



Founded and headquartered in Ankara, the Yunus Emre Institute is an admired public institution running more than 58 cultural centres abroad. The Institute organises courses for teaching Turkish and supports related scientific research and studies. Besides the Turkish language and literature training held in the many cultural centres, departments of Turkology and Turkish teaching are supported by co-operation with various educational institutions in many countries. The Institute has a department dedicated to assessing Turkish language skills, which develops and administers Turkish proficiency exams three times a year. The Institute also organises numerous national and international activities promoting Turkish art and culture. Its aim is to increase the number of people who are fond of Turkey around the world and also to enhance its recognition, credibility, and prestige in the international arena.

TestDaF-Institut belongs to the Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung e.V. (g.a.s.t., Society for Academic Study Preparation and Test Development). This non-profit organization is concerned with the development, administration and validation of language proficiency and scholastic aptitude tests for international students, in particular TestDaF (Test of German as a Foreign Language), TestAS (Test for Academic Studies), and onSET (Online Language Placement Tests). Together with the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, g.a.s.t. offers the web-based learning platform Deutsch-Uni Online (DUO). g.a.s.t. conducts research in the field of language and educational assessments, focusing on rater-mediated assessment, technology-based assessment, and the analysis of factors that account for the success of students in higher education.

TestDaF-Institut has been an ALTE member since 2005. The TestDaF was one of the first tests audited in 2007 after ALTE included audits in its Quality Management System. The TestDaF was successfully re-audited in January 2012 and again in November 2017.
