Please note that the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is a new digital border control system that will apply to non‑EU travellers entering the Schengen Area for short stays. The system is expected to be implemented from late 2025, with full implementation by 10th April 2026. More information is available here: https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ees/what-is-the-ees.
Under the EES, travellers will be required to provide biometric data (fingerprints and a facial image) at border control. As a result, longer and less predictable waiting times are anticipated at airports and other external Schengen borders, particularly during the initial months after implementation.
From castles, museums and art collections to lakes, parks and beer gardens, the Bavarian capital is brimming with culture and history. With a population of 1.6 million, it has all the benefits of a big city, yet still a feel of “Gemütlichkeit” (“cosiness”).
Find out more on Munich’s tourist information website: https://www.muenchen.de/en/tourism
Additionally, the staff members of the Goethe Institute have put together a selection of ideas and recommendations for you - most of them close to the conference venue - covering culture, sports, strolls, food & drinks, shopping, history, and nature. You can find the booklet here: Tips for your stay in Munich.
Munich is easily accessible by road, rail, and air.
Munich Airport “Franz Josef Strauß” (IATA-Code: MUC) lies about 32 kilometers north-east of the city and is well connected to the city centre.
Munich Central Station (“München Hauptbahnhof”) is located right in the middle of the city.
How to get to the conference venue
Public transportation
Please be aware of changes with train connections in Munich due to engineering works.
The S-Bahn (city train) stop is called “Rosenheimer Platz”. The station is underground, and the conference hotel is located directly above it. During the conference (15–17 April 2026), the conference venue can be reached by S-Bahn (city train) only from the direction of “Ostbahnhof”. To reach “Rosenheimer Platz” from the city centre and the main station (“Hauptbahnhof”), please take the underground line U5 towards “Neuperlach Süd”, get off at “Ostbahnhof” and change to any S-Bahn (city train) heading towards “Rosenheimer Platz”. From the stop “Rosenheimer Platz” it is about 2–3 minutes walk to the hotel.
If you arrive in Munich by plane:
Due to construction work there is no direct train connection from Munich airport to Munich city centre from Monday 13th till Thursday 16th April. You have two travel options:
1. You can take the Lufthansa Airport Shuttle to Munich Central Station, see Munich Airport Shuttle | Timetable & Tickets. The shuttle ticket costs 12 Euros online, but to continue your journey on public transport, you must buy an additional ticket (Zone M, price €4,20 single ticket for adults).
2. You can take the rail replacement bus “Bus S8”. Busses are leaving every 10 minutes. You will travel three stops by bus from the airport (to reach the bus stop, please follow this sign for the rail replacement service
) and then change at “Ismaning” to the train line S8 towards the city centre. The ride from the airport to “Ostbahnhof” will take approx. one hour and the ticket costs around €17,50.
For all other days without disruption: At Munich Airport you will find the train station located underground below the MAC (Munich Airport Center). Just follow the signs with the green "S" logo (S-Bahn). Take the S8 toward “Herrsching” (frequency of departure: every 20 minutes). Exit at “Rosenheimer Platz”. The ride will take approx. 40 minutes and the ticket costs around €15.
If you arrive in Munich by train: to reach “Rosenheimer Platz” from the main station (“Hauptbahnhof”), please take the underground line U5 towards “Neuperlach Süd”, get off at “Ostbahnhof” and change to any S-Bahn (city train) heading towards “Rosenheimer Platz. From the stop “Rosenheimer Platz” it is a 2–3 minutes walk to the hotel.
The ride will take approx. 10-15 minutes and the ticket costs around €4.20.
On Monday and Tuesday (13–14 April), the stop “Rosenheimer Platz” will be closed. There are two alternative routes
1. Travel to Ostbahnhof and then walk through the lovely “Haidhausen” district for about 10-15 minutes to the conference venue.
2. Take the underground line U5 from “Hauptbahnhof” or “Ostbahnhof” to “Max-Weber-Platz” (four stops from “Hauptbahnhof” or one stop from “Ostbahnhof”) and change there to tram line 25 to the stop “Rosenheimer Platz”. From there it is a 5-minute walk to the conference venue.
Check out group or day tickets if you are travelling in a group and/or planning further journeys on the same day, as these are usually cheaper.
Note: Please purchase your ticket before boarding public transportation. It is not always possible to buy the ticket inside the vehicle (train, bus or tram) and you will be charged with a penalty without a valid ticket. You can buy your ticket from a ticket machine or via this app: MVGO - One app, drive everything | MVG

The conference dinner will be held at the “Hofbräukeller”, which is located within 10 minutes walking distance from the conference venue: Hofbräukeller, Innere Wiener Straße 19, 81667 Munich.
The Hofbräukeller is a traditional Bavarian restaurant with a rich history. Dating back to the 18th century, it was originally designed as a beer cellar and later evolved into the beautiful beer garden and restaurant it is today. The conference dinner will take place on the first floor, where you can enjoy the unique ambience of the “Großer Festsaal” (Grand Ballroom) and the picturesque view over Wiener Square. Let us raise a glass of world-famous Hofbräu beer – or a non-alcoholic alternative – and share a wonderful evening together!
Please note that the conference dinner has now reached full capacity (350 places). If you are no longer planning to attend the event, we kindly ask you to inform the ALTE Secretariat (secretariat@alte.org) as soon as possible.
